The turf surface of artificial turf can be divided into Mosaic and woven two types. The woven lawn is made of nylon and the finished product is felt like a blanket. Compared with Mosaic tufted lawn, woven artificial lawn production process is complex, relatively expensive price, high surface hardness, poor buffering performance, but the lawn uniformity is good, good durability, very suitable for tennis, hockey, lawn bowling and other sports. Compared with woven lawns, Mosaic lawns have longer, more variable leaf fibers, ranging from 12mm to 55mm, which can be adjusted for special needs. The sod is filled with quartz sand, rubber pellets, or a mixture of both. The appearance and performance are also close to natural grass. It can be installed indoors or outdoors. Suitable for football, soccer, baseball, etc.
Artificial turf is usually filled with sand or rubber particles, sometimes a mixture of the two. When mixing, the ratio of the two depends on the specific situation, the common mixing ratio is 70% rubber particles +30% sand. In the past, 100% sand was often used as filling material to increase the stability of lawn foundations. But with the growing maturity of artificial turf manufacturing technology, its basic manufacturing has been relatively perfect. As a result, the old practice of using sand to stabilize lawns has gradually been phased out. At present, 100% rubber particles are widely used in filling methods. The sand or rubber particles filled are mostly medium size and must be cleaned before filling. For some sports with high impact strength, such as football, soccer, etc., the proportion of rubber particles should be appropriately increased in order to minimize the injury of athletes. For sports venues with low impact strength or small impact effect, such as tennis courts, as long as the hardness of the field is uniform, the requirements for shock absorption are not high, so there is a lot of room for the choice of filling materials.
The filling depth of quartz sand or rubber particles in artificial turf can be determined according to the purpose of use and the height of the selected turf bundle. For sports with high impact strength, artificial turf with long blade bundles and deep padding can be used. In general, the appropriate filling depth of artificial football turf is 5mm from the tip of the blade. For sports requiring high flatness and good uniformity, such as hockey, leaf bundles can be reduced appropriately, filling depth can be increased, and even flush with the surface of the grass. Research from Pennsylvania State University in the United States has shown that the type and depth of padding on artificial football turf can partly control the bounce of the ball and the surface hardness of the field
Some artificial lawns are designed with drainage systems. The turf MATS are permeable and the base layers are designed with drainage pipes. The construction structure of this kind of lawn is complex and the cost is high. However, some systems do not design drainage systems and rely on the natural slope of the surface for drainage, so the surface construction requirements are high.
